Favorite movies of 2007

January 1st, 2008 by Jeff

We’ve started putting up some “best of 2007″ lists over at Dead Lantern. Here’s my list and Mat’s list. Hopefully Steve, Deejay and Brady might put up some of their favorites as well.

What were your favorite flicks of 2007?

It seems that every year I get to see less and less movies at the theater. I hate it because I was always the “go to the movies” guy. But with three kids, and my setup at home, sometimes it’s easier to just wait for the DVD to come out. And since a bunch of movie only took 3 months to hit DVD, it wasn’t like I had to wait all that long. Anyway, not that you’re looking for my opinion, but you asked:

5 - 1408. I’ve always like John Cusack, and I like Ghost Hunters on the Sci-Fi channel, this was a nifty movie that twists a couple of time that I wasn’t expecting. I saw the unrated cut before I saw the Theatrical, and I like the latter.

4 - TMNT. It seemed liked they forgot to fight a major enemy during this movie, but the dynamic of the brothers turtle I thought made for a great story. Hopefully they’ll still go ahead with a sequel, even DVD-direct. I’m done takin’ orders!

3- Live Free or Die Hard. But it HAS to be unrated. I guess, like with TMNT and Superman Returns, I enjoy sequels of characters that I like, and the continuation of their story.

However, I could live with Rush Hour 3, it’s like they ran out of time or money and just ended that movie. As is it just me, or did it look like Chris Tucker had the goatie to hide that he just ate 2 bags of donuts? What was the last thing he’s done? Oh yeah, Rush hour 2.

2- Spider-Man 3. This falls under the whole thing I was talking about for LFODH. Yes, there was a ton wrong with the movie. Had I done it: The black suit would have been a suit for the whole movie, and then at the end have it join with Brock and make Venom for A Whole ‘nother movie. Sam Rami caved to producer and fan demands and gave us all the finger. BUT, I thought Harry’s part was great, Peter’s handling of fame. If they move on to another movie, this would a fitting “end” to this cast and crew…if that’s what they do. I would love to see another one with everyone back.

1 - Transformers. This is the movie I had been waiting about 20 years to see. Transformers were the best thing when I was a kid, and I’ve always had a fondness for them, although I never really followed the cartoons beyond the first generation. There were a couple of Michael Bay-isms that I wish they avoided, but this movie was had action, human heart stuff, and humor. When I saw this movie in the theater and the autobots come crashing down I got goosebumps (and a little tear to my eye) because you knew that it was time to get things going. And Optimus Prime hit the screen. Flash forward to the DVD release, I was watching with my girls, and they both sighed “Optimus Prime” when he hit the screen. Another tear as I felt like a kid again wathc the animated movie.

There might be a few more to list, but I’ve already taken too much space on YOUR blog. Happy new year, Jeff.

I liked 1408 pretty well - where can I get some framed prints of those creepy paintings to hang in my place? LOL.

I missed seeing LFODH at the theater but saw the unrated DVD. I didn’t dig the main villain (too goofy looking) but on the whole the movie was very fun. Hard to believe the 3rd one was almost 10 years ago.
