Hucklebee?

December 21st, 2007 by Jeff

The guy’s name is Huckabee. Huck-uh-bee. Not Hucklebee.

I’m not even “for” this guy (aside from being thrilled that a “real” candidate has campaigned on the FairTax) but this mispronunciation of his name is driving me nuts.

I just heard some guy call in to Rush Limbaugh’s show, purporting to be a big Huckabee supporter, and the guy kept saying “Hucklebee” over and over. Made him sound really foolish.

Am I wrong? Is this just an accepted alternate pronunciation?

Also: I did a one-click upgrade of my WordPress software and it fouled up my site’s skin. I guess I’ll look around for a backup of my design, or just pick a new skin. It was a good thing I did it here, before I try to upgrade Dead Lantern’s software and nuke that skin :P

Maybe Rush couldn’t hear the difference between the pronunciation. I’m not sure what the limitation of Cochlear implants are, but it wouldn’t surprise me if you miss little details like this. Also the telephony equipment might be to blame. I’ve had radio winners who sound like they’re saying their name is Ben. I record the winning saying “Hey, Ben, we’ve got a great pamphlet on how to cook a turkey for you,” then take their information and they’ll say something like “It’s Glenn actually.” Even though it drives listener nuts, you have to skip on correcting the person for the sake of the show. Lame excuses, I know, but maybe that’s what’s going on.

What happened was the caller was clearly saying “Hucklebee” several times - which is an easy mistake I suppose (I’ve heard others make the same mispronunciation) but it seems funny because this guy was claiming to be a staunch “Hucklebee” supporter. You’d think that if you were really behind this candidate, you’d know what his name was.

So I’m not commenting on the inside baseball of the radio show so much as I am that there are these purportedly staunch Huckabee supporters out there who apparently don’t even know the guy’s name - which leads me to think they aren’t putting a whole lot of thought into their support. I don’t like the idea that Huckabee might win the primary with the support of those sorts of voters.

I think Rush was just being nice to the guy by not pointing it out during the call.

My least favorite things that callers to talk radio say? “Your screener told me to be brief…” and “I’ll hang up and listen to your answer.” - those drive me nuts :D

I was listening to Dr. Laura the other night, and the caller refered to the screener as, “I was telling you secretary…”

Half the time, I don’t think the hosts listen to what the caller is saying, just picking up on a few choice words.

A few minutes ago, I just got off the air saying that we’re playing all Christmas songs, all weekend long, and it never fails that I get someone calling up asking for a regular country songs.

Anyway, Merry Christmas to you, and your family. Your Christmas cards came out great.

Ron Paul supporters have taken to calling him “The Huckster”

I’ve heard his supporters called “Hucksters”, like Howard Dean had the “Deaniacs” back in 2K4.
