The Condemned

Monday, December 31st, 2007 by Jeff

thecondemned.jpg

I just watched The Condemned, a straight-to-DVD action flick starring Steve Austin. You might dismiss it since it comes from WWE films, but I thought it was a fun watch. Sort of an updated version of The Running Man or Surviving the Game. There are a couple really tedious subplots but nothing too damaging.

I love YTMND, every once in a while you see something really genius.

Rude Jude & RA debating MC Hammer

Sunday, December 23rd, 2007 by Jeff

Shout-outs to Phat over on the SCS board for sharing this link. I’m not a huge hip-hop guy (although I do like it just fine) but this interview is interesting to me for whatever reason. When they get into the context of what is modern hip-hop, that’s almost a parallel to other debates I’ve had, like what is or isn’t a classic horror movie, etc.

Caution: dirty words, NSFW.

Mobile podcasting

Sunday, December 23rd, 2007 by Jeff

mxl990usb.jpgI ordered an MXL990 USB microphone, which will hopefully be delivered on Monday. Mat, Steve & I are going to try to do some podcasting from Grand Island on Christmas Day so I wanted a microphone that would pick all three of us up as we sit around a table. The MXL990 is the same microphone we use in Spooky McPhee’s haunted studio (although his aren’t USB) so I’m hoping we get good results with this one. The USB and non-USB versions look identical aside from the connection on the bottom, of course. We’ll hook it up to my laptop and give it a try.

Assuming it all goes as planned, you can look forward to a special Christmas Day edition of The Splattercast. But then, I guess I won’t be uploading it until a couple days later, so don’t plan your whole holiday around it :D

There’s a nifty gallery at DS Fanboy with new images of the upcoming Advance Wars: Days of Ruin. The art designs for the new CO’s is awesome.

Hucklebee?

Friday, December 21st, 2007 by Jeff

The guy’s name is Huckabee. Huck-uh-bee. Not Hucklebee.

I’m not even “for” this guy (aside from being thrilled that a “real” candidate has campaigned on the FairTax) but this mispronunciation of his name is driving me nuts.

I just heard some guy call in to Rush Limbaugh’s show, purporting to be a big Huckabee supporter, and the guy kept saying “Hucklebee” over and over. Made him sound really foolish.

Am I wrong? Is this just an accepted alternate pronunciation?

Also: I did a one-click upgrade of my WordPress software and it fouled up my site’s skin. I guess I’ll look around for a backup of my design, or just pick a new skin. It was a good thing I did it here, before I try to upgrade Dead Lantern’s software and nuke that skin :P

I’ve done this about 10 times now

Sunday, December 16th, 2007 by Jeff

Big ups to my brother Nate for bringing me a coat hanger this morning when I locked myself out of my car at the post office. I did the same thing several times back in Jefferson City, too. I dunno what my deal is.

We went to see I Am Legend last night and I’m sorry to report that it was pretty weak. Unless you’re a really big Fresh Prince fan, I’d say you could skip this one.

Snow blows

Tuesday, December 11th, 2007 by Jeff

Lots of crummy weather going on right now here in Lincoln. I had to hack through a thick layer of ice coating my car so I could get to work. I’m definitely hoping to get a house with a garage soon.

No Country for Old Men

Sunday, December 9th, 2007 by Jeff

nocountry3.jpgI finally got to see No Country for Old Men last night. We went with some friends after dinner and drinks. I thought it was a really great movie. The ending is befuddling, to say the least, but I was pretty riveted throughout the whole thing. And though you may be bewildered, I think the ending makes sense and fits with the rest of the movie if you ponder it for a little while. One of our group had read the novel and told us that the movie follows it almost exactly.

Generally speaking, I think the Oscars can eat a dick but I’d like to see No Country win some awards.

God of War 2 HD-Mode

Thursday, December 6th, 2007 by Jeff

gowhdinstructions.jpgI’ve been trying this “hidden” faux-HD mode the developers of God of War 2 came up with. I must say, this game looks amazing in this mode. I just played through the sequence where Kratos flies to the Island of Creation and fights the griffons in mid-air. Friggin’ awesome.

It’s mostly the game itself and the fantastic level design and all-around high production values that make it look so good - it’s awesome in standard-def; but this HD mode is a treat.

God of War is to the Playstation 2 what Resident Evil 4 was to the GameCube: A game that is just so amazing, you have to do a double-take, like you can’t believe this game is running on that hardware.
